200 devices tested for ReadyBoost compatibility

Filed under: flash, readyboost, technology, vista — grant @ 11:17 pm

The Vista ReadyBoost compatibility list received its 200th submission today.  The list now tracks the ReadyBoost ‘readiness’ of devices from over 45 manufacturers.

Some fun facts based on the data gathered so far:

  • A little over half all tested devices (55%) were confirmed compatible with ReadyBoost.

  • The highest number of compatible device reports have come from SanDisk users - nearly 20% of all positive reports received.  In total, over 78% of the SanDisk devices were ReadyBoost compatible.

  • PNY users reported the greatest number of incompatible devices - 12% of all the incompatible devices reported. Most PNY users (55%) found their devices to be incompatible.  Funny then that PNY should choose to mention ReadyBoost as a reason to buy PNY.

If there’s one thing the list does show, it’s that no one manufacturer has ReadyBoost compatibility nailed across their range.  If you’re thinking about buying a new Flash device for ReadyBoost, check the list first.

Finally, many thanks to everyone who have submitted their results so far.  And special thanks to Maverick, Jim Byram and the others who have returned several times with compatibility reports for new Flash devices.  The list wouldn’t exist without all your help.

Fix for Gmail java app error

Filed under: gmail, java, mobile — grant @ 11:05 am

Google recently launched a mobile java client for Gmail.  You can download it by pointing your mobile browser to: gmail.com/app

When I first tried it I got the error “This program requires a working data connection … Please check your signal strength”.  Strange thing is I do have a working data connection that works with regular browser access and java apps like Opera, so what’s wrong with Gmail….

Turns out it’s only compatible with Gmail accounts that are set to US English - mine was on UK English.  Logging into my account from a desktop browser and changing my preference to US English fixed it - fast Gmail on my phone… sweet!

SocialSearchr public beta

Filed under: google, search, site launches, technology — grant @ 3:16 pm

I’ve just launched an early public beta of SocialSearchr.  Using a combination of Google AJAX Search and the newly released Google Custom Search the site aims to improve the quality of search results in various niche categories by including only results from specific, trusted sites.

Recipe search

The first category to launch was recipe search, which only includes geniune, quality recipe sites such as the BBC Food site, Epicurious.com and others.  Other categories have followed, and each will be refined and improved over time using user feedback to hone results.

If you have any suggestions for new categories, please let me know.

Sony Bravia Glasgow ad goes live

Filed under: Uncategorized — grant @ 10:12 am

Sony published their follow up to the San Francisco ‘Balls’ ad today.  Filmed in Glasgow, the new ad features a tower block getting blasted with coloured paint.  It’ll be shown on TV tonight, but you can see it online now at: http://www.bravia-advert.com/paint/thead/

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the end result.  When they were filming it all looked quite impressive, but it was a dull grey day and didn’t have anything like the intensity of the SF balls ad.  I thought they might’ve had a plan to sort that out in post production, but evidently they didn’t.  It was a bit of a shame really - we had a summer of brilliant blue skies and sunshine in Glasgow and they just happened to film on some of the dullest afternoons of the year.

I was there at the original filming of the ad back in July - here are some of my pics from the day…

All of my photos from the filming are online at high res here

Sudoku module for Netvibes

Filed under: flash, sudoku — grant @ 5:02 pm

I’ve been getting into Netvibes recently.  I’ll probably write more about it later, but for now just wanted to announce my first Netvibes module - MySudoku.

After looking at the other Sudoku modules available on Netvibes, I thought my own Sudoku engine improved on all of those in several key areas.  It took about three hours to convert my Flash app into Netvibes compatible code.

Just checked and there has been 34 downloads so far today.  Looks like Om Malik’s Widgetization of the Web might be the way forward.  It certainly gives exposure to small developers like myself, and will hopefully generate some useful feedback.

Take a look - my sudoku module page is here.

If you have a Netvibes account, add my module: Add to Netvibes
