Fuel Economy Calculator

I originally created this calculator to solve a fairly common problem. In the UK we're sold petrol in litres but are quoted fuel economy figures in gallons. To make matters worse, many cars (especially imports) are supplied with odometers reading in kilometers. Trying to do a quick conversion from litres bought at the pump to actual MPG was pretty tricky. I made this calculator to solve that problem.

Not sure how many litres you're using?

To use the calc you'll need to know how many litres you bought. If like most people, you know how much you spent rather than how many litres you bought, you can use this pre-calc to convert the two. It'll pre-fill the litres section of the main calculator for you.

Fuel Economy Tips

  • Your car's weight and frontal area are the two largest contributing factors to fuel consumption
  • Avoid abrupt acceleration and deceleration; accelerate as gradually as possible, try to keep a stable speed, time your movement to minimize slowing, and coast whenever possible (except in a manual with fuel injection!)
  • Ensure the air pressure in your tyres is correct
