I’ve been designing and building web sites since 1995, but I have a very broad interest in technology which has seen me take on a wide variety of projects — anything from building video editing suites to developing 3D prototypes for patent applications.
These days I’m Deputy Managing Director at the Glasgow creative agency Bright Signals. Here I oversee all of our output, but my main interest and expertise is in physical builds and installations. You can see some examples of the things I’ve built in the portfolio page.
Over the past 20 years my work has fallen into the following broad areas.
Web Design and Development
I’ve worked on just about every part of web development projects, from producing concept sketches through Photoshop designs, front-end development, back-end programming and project management.
Management and Digital Innovation
I’ve worked in various digital tech management roles over the years, usually mixing leadership with some degree of hands-on development. At s1jobs I was lead designer, then head of innovation and ultimately web producer, overseeing the full design and dev team. At The Herald I headed up the digital department, not only managing our design and dev team, but also planning our commercial strategy and editorial direction. Now, at Bright Signals, I’m Deputy MD, responsible for around 20 staff across a range of disciplines including creative, production and project management. For more details, see my LinkedIn profile.
Search Engine Optimisation
I have nearly two decades of experience in search optimisation, having developed strategies that have taken numerous sites to a top ranking position in their market. I also have extensive experience in pay per click (PPC) and social media marketing through Google, Facebook and Twitter which can be perfect for driving short-term, high-volume traffic for niche topics. Game and Museum Exhibit Development
I’ve developed a wide variety of games, animations and interactive exhibits for brands including SSE, Sony Pictures, Glasgow Housing Association and Glasgow Science Centre.
Talks, debates and presentations
I’m regularly asked to speak on a range of subjects including journalism in the digital age, social media, the Internet of Things and IT careers. Recent engagements a talk and subsequent debate at the 2013 Edinburgh International Book Festival, a talk at the 2014 Scottish Newspaper Society Conference, a presentation to 140+ international journalism students as part of Future News 2014 and various careers talks.
I review gadgets, games and other technology for The Herald newspaper in print and online. So far I’ve reviewed over 200 gadgets from cameras to ‘smart pens’ to disaster-proof hard drives. Follow the link above to read my reviews and if you have a product you’d like me to test please contact me.
